Discover Your Inner Masculine & Feminine Archetypes
By Eva Hund, Institute for Polarity
INTRODUCTION
You don’t have one Self, but are made up of two powerful forces: your inner masculine and inner feminine. These are not genders, but archetypal modes of consciousness that shape how you move, relate, create, and lead.
Understanding these parts helps you gain a sense of awareness & accountability: if you know what you offer, you also know what you need to develop more of (or what you need to ask a partner to contribute more).
This tool helps you identify your dominant pole, your Shadow patterns, and the archetypes that influence your behavior.
This is just a helpful lens that will help you make sense of the differences between these parts.

STEP 1: SELF‑ASSESSMENT QUESTIONS
Answer
each statement with: Often – Sometimes – Rarely
Masculine‑Oriented Statements
I feel most grounded when I have clarity, direction, or a plan.
I naturally take responsibility or step into leadership when things feel chaotic.
I prefer structure, logic, and problem‑solving over emotional exploration.
I withdraw when I feel overwhelmed.
I value independence and self‑reliance.
I feel most comfortable when things are resolved and steady.
I struggle when the emotional tone shifts quickly; I need a moment to re‑orient.
Feminine‑Oriented Statements
I feel most alive when I am connected, expressive, or emotionally open.
I naturally attune to the needs, moods, or energy of others.
I prefer flow, intuition, and creativity over rigid structure.
I reach outward when I feel overwhelmed and often seek connection or reassurance.
I value depth, intimacy, and emotional resonance.
I feel safest when my partner provides structure.
I experience love most strongly through depth, presence, and emotional availability.
STEP 2: IDENTIFY YOUR DOMINANT POLE
Count how many statements you marked Often:
More in 1–7 → Dominant Masculine Pole
More in 8–14 → Dominant Feminine Pole
REMEMBER! Your dominant pole is not your gender, but your default operating mode.
You can also complete this tool for a specific context (work, intimacy, conflict, creativity).
Our energy is fluid: we respond to the energy expressed by others, so this dynamic can change from one moment to the next. This tool simply helps you identify what pole you lean toward more (in this particular instant, or in general).
Extra! Now look at the statements you would answer with Rarely: chances are that these are aspects or qualities that your partner expresses much more. After all, we attract people with reciprocal traits. This is true in general, but also in each moment, so we sometimes “flip side.
STEP 3: MEET YOUR ARCHETYPE
THE MASCULINE ARCHETYPE: THE ANCHOR
Clarity • Direction • Presence
You are driven by a desire for emptiness: that sense of spaciousness that comes from focus, purpose, and internal stillness. Everything the masculine does is aimed to return a sense of order and spaciousness.
Gifts
Stability
Leadership
Discernment
Integrity
Shadow
Emotional distance
Over‑control
Withdrawal
Hyper‑independence
Growth Challenge
Continue to work on deepening your presence.
Stay open and fight your impulse to hold onto rigid patterns (logic/reason) or withdrawal. Expand your tolerance for connection in the midst of chaos and discomfort.
THE FEMININE ARCHETYPE: THE WAVE
Expression • Openness • Sensitivity
You are driven by a desire for fullness: the richness of connection, emotion, and embodied experiences.
Gifts
Intuition
Empathy
Creativity
Emotional intelligence
Shadow
Chaos
Over‑giving
Emotional flooding (over-sharing/dumping emotions)
Seeking validation
Growth Challenge
Strengthen your own center, by leaning into full expression of who you are. Try not to lean so much on external validation for this sense of safety.
Become more radiant, and not more restrained. Don’t focus your energy on playing “feminine energy” as a part, but try to relax into your authentic experience in the moment. There is nothing for you to strive for, aside from responding more directly to the now as your feelings come up.
SUB‑ARCHETYPES
Masculine Sub‑Archetypes
The Protector: boundaries, vigilance, loyalty
The Visionary: direction, purpose, clarity
The Sovereign: integrity, leadership, responsibility
Feminine Sub‑Archetypes
The Muse: inspiration, sensuality, emotional expression
The Oracle: intuition, depth, inner knowing
The Nurturer: care, attunement, devotion
STEP 4: PERSONAL REFLECTION
Use these prompts to deepen your insight:
Which archetype feels most familiar to me?
What feels more comfortable to me: a sense of emptiness or fullness?
What does my Shadow look like in relationships?
What do I tend to outsource to others?
What part of me really needs to be integrated right now?
Again, don’t think of this tool as an “Identity” or a verdict.
It is a blueprint to help you see yourself more clearly and to interact with more intention.
The more aware you are of these aspects and how you express them, the more leadership you can experience in your relationships.
There are many more archetypes than the ones listed above. In fact, there are endless variations: the point is that you find the qualities and aspects that you can best identify with. These will help you tell the “story” of your relationship, your life, and its patterns more clearly. And, better yet, archetypes also help us predict how our dynamics will develop. This is the power of stories: we can identify themes and patterns that help us make the connection between universal truths and personal experiences.
WHAT POLARITY OFFERS YOU
When you understand your inner masculine and feminine, you can start working with your different parts. In relationships, this means you take accountability for the energetic role that you play and what that offers the dynamic between you and your partner.
This creates:
deeper intimacy
clearer leadership
emotional coherence
a stronger sense of purpose
This tool just gives you a snapshot of what this looks like.
The polarity framework has many aspects and layers, so there is a lot to explore.
Embodied Polarity gives you the full map. If you’d like to explore how energy works and get a deeper sense of the framework, start with the book.
