MIND THE GAP: Why Polarity Is Not Just a Theory

Polarity is often misunderstood as just another conceptual model: a nice, abstract theory. But it is much better understood as a functional framework that shows us the energetic layers underneath our relational behavior. Most relational pain doesn’t come from the moment itself, or even from our behavior. It is always a consequence of our orientation, or state of awareness within a particular moment.

Whenever we feel a space between ourselves and our partner — a pause, a silence, a shift — we tend to experience a sense of collapse. We turn inward and try to fill in that gap with what we have come to believe about ourselves, safety, and love.

The Mind is Not Our Best Ally

That gap soon becomes intolerable, and we rush to fill it with meaning. But the meaning we add is almost always fear‑based:

“I’m too much.”

“I’m not enough.”

“I’m excluded.”

“I’m abandoned.”

“I don’t belong.”

These are not personal truths, but energetic reflexes of our flawed mind. And we rely much too heavily on our mind.

How Polarity Work Helps Us Find a New Orientation

Polarity helps us recognize these movements for what they are: the reciprocal responses of the masculine and feminine poles under pressure. We are constantly switching between these inner parts. Our internal masculine leans toward space, the feminine toward connection: both are always trying to restore safety. The resulting tension we experience together is not pathology, but a signal of what we are focusing on internally. It gives us insight into the ongoing, universal interplay between the two poles within us. Awareness is only the first step, as I explain in Embodied Polarity. The deeper value of polarity lies in what these reciprocal energies allow us to contribute to our specific relationship container.

Tension becomes really valuable information, instead of an obstacle. It tells us exactly what the moment needs, and what each partner can offer to repair or deepen the connection. That is hugely empowering for the whole relationship.

What is the Value of Tension?

In the midst of tension, we can learn to redirect our focus toward the moment: the question shifts from “Why is this happening?” to “What does this moment need, and how can I amplify my energy to evoke something new?” This is where real change happens. We don't resolve our conflict or tension by closing the gap, but by learning to hold it. This has nothing to do with fixing behavior, but with shifting orientation. When we learn this, we stop contracting into fear, and can really start investing our energy into the relationship. This is a benefit for all involved. Our wounds even reveal our strongest mover: For the feminine, that mover is yearning --> the impulse toward connection, expansion, and emotional truth. For the masculine, that mover is purpose --> the impulse toward direction, clarity, and stabilizing structure. These are not weaknesses, but powerful engines that show us how we can participate in the relationship with intention rather than reactivity.

My Mission

This is why polarity captivated me so deeply that I left the certainty of my steady career. Once you see the energetic logic beneath our patterns, you can’t unsee it. When you learn to work with it, relationship issues stop being so random and confusing. You can start to connect the dots. Polarity doesn’t categorize us, but it activates us and offers us clarity. More importantly, it gives us a sense of our unique influence. And it teaches us how to offer safety, not just reach for it. When we redirect our focus and become intentional with this energy (our inner Masculine & Feminine parts), we change the whole dynamic and meet our partner with new eyes.
