The real leverage point in couples work is orientation, not communication.
Stop managing behavior. Start tracking orientation.
Relational drama is rarely unique or personal: it shows how we all play out energetic patterns.
Why Do Couples Keep Repeating the Same Fights?
You know how everyone repeats, “It’s not about the dishes/dirty socks?” or some other cliché about couples stuck in the same fight? This is why.
As long as we focus on the specific details of these issues, we miss out on the underlying energetic tension that drives it all. No wonder couples often go around in circles, even after years of therapy or self-help endeavors.
This is where Jung calls on us to “make the unconscious conscious.” When we gain clarity on this energetic layer, we can deal with the patterns at their root.
How Can Therapists Help Couples Change Their Patterns?
Energetic orientation → Impact → Agency
Many methods for self-help (dare I say most?!) focus on behaviour, communication, or emotional processing. The Polarity Framework, as I laid it out in my book, Embodied Polarity, offers clarity about the energetic system underneath all of that. Transformation takes more than scratching the surface: we need to dig a little deeper and see what drives all of it.
What Are the Steps to Changing Relational Dynamics?
We can trace this all back to this progression of “steps”:
Energetic orientation → Impact → Agency
This is the sequence that matters for individuals, therapists, and for couples learning shared leadership.
1. Energetic orientation
Every moment can be defined by an orientation of energy:
toward clarity or toward expression, toward containment or toward openness, toward steadiness or toward movement.
Orientation is not a personality trait or a role. And it is certainly not a gendered identity!
It is simply the energetic direction your system takes when it is under pressure.
When you can learn to identify your orientation as it is in each moment of time, you stop working with stories that your mind has made up… and you start to become accountable for how you are actually moving. Which is how we arrive at your energetic impact:
2. Impact
Your energetic orientation is not something you keep for yourself, tucked into a neat little box. It spills out and shapes what you evoke in others. This is your energetic influence, for better or worse. I often refer to this as your part in the “energy exchange”. More often than not, this happens beyond your awareness.
A regulated masculine orientation is marked by direction and stability. A regulated feminine orientation is marked by energetic openness and movement. Tension occurs whether these traits are mature or immature. That is a crucial point to remember in polarity practice: tension is not a symptom of conscious disagreements, but of an energetic push & pull.
Even healthy reciprocal traits end up in a tug of war, energetically: one partner’s movement triggers tension in the other partner, who is oriented toward stillness, etc.
Your orientation is the engine of your relational impact, in all areas of your life: in work partnerships, family dynamics, and in all your relationships.

How Can Lovers Get Their Power Back?
When two people can name their energetic orientation, they can see the entire “field” (or space) between them with deeper clarity.
3. Agency
Agency is not about your level of confidence, your self-esteem or communication skills.
It is the result of your ability to shift your orientation deliberately, knowing exactly how that shift will change your impact. That is what it means to take energetic ownership within relationships.
This is where polarity becomes much more than just a theory: it is a powerful tool for transformation.
When you know what your orientation is, you also know your impact. And once you can shift your orientation, you regain agency and the whole dynamic changes.
This is the foundation of shared leadership: two people who can feel their orientation, track their energetic exchange, and adjust their impact without constantly collapsing into old patterns.
Why this matters for practitioners and therapists
The Polarity Framework trains you to read orientation, tension, and impact with precision, in yourself and in the couples you work with.
It gives you:
a way to identify what’s happening beneath behaviour
a vocabulary for what shifts in the body
a map for how tension reorganizes the space between lovers
a method for helping people regain a sense of agency (beyond intellectualizing their patterns)
a structure for shared leadership in couples work
This is the work: orientation → impact → agency
An embodied system that changes how people meet themselves and each other.
