When “Better Communication” Makes Things Worse

Couples can’t talk or think their way out of an unconscious pattern.

They might say, “I want you to trust me,” but their energy communicates something entirely different: “I am not grounded, so I cannot hold you.”

This is the core problem that couples face in their attempt to tackle issues, and many forms of therapeutic practice are not helpful.

Couples often try to fix unconscious relational patterns with conscious communication tools or with a more detailed analysis of their issues. And in doing so, they create a mismatch that actually reinforces the very cycles they are trying to escape.

This mismatch is especially pronounced in attachment dynamics, that are so clearly driven by an energetic push/pull dynamic.

A Clear Example: How Words and Energy Can be Mismatched

Partner A (anxious orientation)

Says: “I’m not trying to pressure you. I just want to understand you better.”

Energetically: leaning in, pursuing, emotionally activated — an outward, seeking orientation.

Partner B (avoidant orientation)

Says: “I’m listening. I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”

Energetically: pulling back, bracing, minimizing expression — an inward, protective orientation.

On paper, both partners are communicating “correctly.” But in their actual relational exchange, nothing has changed at all.

Talk therapy can help them see the pattern and name their needs more maturely and effectively, but it rarely addresses what is happening energetically.

And so couples who invest in communication‑based therapy often end up feeling even more frustrated and disconnected.

They can communicate until the cows come home, but it has no effect when the underlying energetic dynamic remains intact. In other words: unconscious, energetic patterns cannot be resolved with conscious, surface‑level tools.

Why Communication Tools Fail Here

Attachment patterns are not cognitive. They are implicit, somatic, and pre‑verbal: part of our orientation (our energetic wiring), not in our language. So when couples attempt to resolve these patterns through:

  • clearer communication

  • empathy exercises

  • reflective listening

  • narrative processing / analysis

They are tackling the wrong layer of the system. Their words move in one direction, while their energy moves in another. Guess what actually drives their relational dynamics? Energy ALWAYS trumps communication.

What Polarity Work Actually Offers Practitioners

The polarity framework gives practitioners a roadmap, a powerful way to connect the dots between their: unconscious orientation expressed need embodied response relational behavior It helps clients articulate not only what they want, but the energetic stance required to make that request more coherent. The more we can zoom into those unconscious layers of longing, wiring, and orientation, the more we can align them with conscious expression. This is what creates congruence and it is evidence of energy that actually matches the request.

A Necessary Distinction: Depth vs. Performance

Much of what circulates online as “polarity work” is simply spiritual hype, or what Alan Watts described as “the ego trying to improve the ego.” It becomes a self‑referential performance and a curated display of depth that never actually touches the unconscious layer it claims to provide access to. Even shadow work, in its popularized form, often becomes another performance, rather than a true descent into the unconscious (in Jungian terms).

This is a cheap substitute for the real thing: a grounded, embodied orientation toward one’s deeper purpose, needs, and relational truth.

Why Therapists Need This Lens

For therapists, this distinction is crucial. When couples attempt to resolve unconscious relational patterns through conscious communication alone, they are not shifting their dynamics at all. They may speak more clearly, maturely, or even with a new level of compassion, but their energy continues to contradict their words.

How Can Therapists Work with the Energetic Layer Beneath the Relational Patterns?

A deeper exploration of these energetic orientations can be found in my book, Embodied Polarity, where I outline a practical framework for working with the unconscious architecture of relational dynamics.
